Not only is it not worth wasting any part of your life unhappy, but also you are more productive and successful when you are happy. I'm not talking about keeping positive thoughts although that helps; I am talking about what you do to make money. If you are not motivated by the work you do, your results are diminished. Even if you work for an hourly pay, if you are not truly happy and driven by the work you do, your work will slack and you may get fired.
We have heard many times to just do what we love, but maybe you think you can't survive just doing what you love. I understand and am not going to push you to just do what you love if you believe you can't survive that way, but I would suggest that you set goals to be able to get to the point that you either have enough money built up or residual income to be able to do what you love for the rest of your life. I am not talking about retirement either, although you should strive to be able to retire early and actually retire if that is your choice of action and what you are doing does not make you happy. Another point to why you do not necessarily have to do what you love to make money is that when you do what you love and make money doing it, what you love usually diminishes just due to the fact that you are relying on it and also receiving a reward for doing it.
Personally, I am working hard with online work because I know that if I work hard enough, eventually money will just be flowing in and I won't have to work any more; I can do what I love! I don't absolutely love online work, but what makes me happy are my goals and rewards. So, you do not necessarily have to do what makes you happy to make money, but you have to be able to find happiness in what you do. How do you find happiness in what you do? Well, you can't actually find happiness, you have to create it. So, how do you create it? You find things in life worth living for and you set goals to be able to get, do, and or have whatever it is that will make you happy. So, in order to do what makes you happy, set goals that make you happy.
Rewarding yourself by doing something things that make you happy is a good start, but it's not always enough. If you work a job you don't like and are not happy doing, the joy rewards doesn't always last long enough. If you notice that whatever you do during you weekends as a reward for working all week isn't making or keeping you happy anymore, set goals to be able to do bigger things. This ties into the concept of giving to yourself, but if you are drained either from work or giving to others, you need to give to yourself. This means doing whatever it takes to give you back your enthusiasm for life. If that means an elaborate trip, it's not exactly the best idea to go bankrupt to do it if you can't afford it, but you can make it a goal and save up to it as long as you want it enough. However, it may take years to build up the money to afford it, so for the mean time, set goals that you can more easily accomplish and afford so that you can stay energized while you work to make the money to do what makes you happy.
